CONCEPT
This trailer does a great job of hooking the audience and leaving them with questions. Why was the sister captured? How does the brother have powers? Who are the companions that the brother runs into? This feels a lot like Avatar: The Last Airbender because of how the world looks and appears to function.
DESIGN
The behind-the-scenes video shows how 2D and 3D elements were blended together. I think the use of light and color is really intriguing--it creates a welcoming, whimsical mood.
I appreciate how each character and set piece is unique, which leads me to believe that the storytelling will also be original and fresh.
ANIMATION
Everything moves beautifully.
I've picked out some of my favorite moments below:
I think this is a great example of overshoot and follow through. The boy jumps down and you can feel his impact, but his legs and shorts continue to move. Then, when he whips the scarf around his neck it does a flutter and settle, incorporating principles of overshoot perfectly.
I like the action lines around the arrows. However, I feel like the action lines create a lot of build up for a lightly underwhelming result. I think the impact of the arrows could have been more exaggerated and have more impact. They could have stuck further into the wood, shaken more on impact, and maybe knocked some splinters loose. Also, when the boy gets picked up I think he could have exited out of the screen in a more violent way. Right now, his whole body is pulled out at the same time, but what if there was some follow through and parts of him didn't move as fast?
This is a great blend of 2D and 3D elements. I love the motion of the bird and how its movement helps the audience feel like they are part of the flight.
